History of virtual reality and augmented reality in neurosurgical training

Knowledge of the history and conceptual underpinnings of these technologies is useful to understand their current and future applications to neurosurgical training. The technological precursors for VR and AR were introduced as early as the 1800s, and draw from the fields of entertainment, flight simulation, and education. However, computer software and processing speeds needed to develop widespread VR and AR-based surgical simulators have only been developed within the last 15 years.
